Acne
Acne is a common skin condition caused by clogged pores, excess oil, and inflammation, leading to pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads. It's extremely common, especially among teens and young adults, and mild to moderate cases can be assessed confidentially without an in-person exam.
Could It Be Acne?
- Whiteheads or blackheads on the face, chest, or back
- Small red, tender bumps (papules) or pus-filled pimples (pustules)
- Oily skin, especially in the T-zone
- Breakouts that flare around hormonal changes (e.g., menstrual cycle)
- Mild scarring or dark marks left behind after pimples heal
- Occasional deeper, painful bumps without significant swelling or scarring
Treatment
- Topical retinoids (adapalene, tretinoin, tazarotene, trifarotene) to unclog pores and reduce inflammation
- Benzoyl peroxide to reduce acne-causing bacteria and inflammation
- Topical antibiotics (clindamycin, erythromycin) or azelaic acid/dapsone for inflammatory acne
- Exfoliating agents (salicylic acid, glycolic acid) to help clear pores
- Guidance on skincare routine and lifestyle habits to reduce flare-ups and prevent scarring
- Ontario pharmacists can assess and prescribe directly for mild acne

Frequently Asked Questions.
What causes acne?
Excess oil production, clogged hair follicles, bacteria, and inflammation, often influenced by hormones, genetics, certain medications, and some skincare or hair products.
How is acne treated?
Topical treatments such as retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, or topical antibiotics, combined with a consistent skincare routine. Ontario’s minor ailments program allows pharmacists to assess and prescribe directly for mild acne.
How long until symptoms improve?
Most topical treatments take 4 to 8 weeks to show noticeable improvement, with full results often taking up to 12 weeks. Some redness or dryness in the first few weeks is common as skin adjusts.
Can acne scar my skin?
Picking or popping pimples increases the risk of scarring and dark marks. Early, consistent treatment helps reduce breakouts and lowers the risk of lasting marks.
Is all acne the same?
No, acne severity ranges from mild (occasional whiteheads/blackheads) to moderate (more widespread pimples) to severe (deep, painful cysts or nodules). Treatment and referral needs depend on severity, which is why acne type and history are reviewed as part of the assessment.
When should I seek in-person care instead?
Seek in-person care for severe or cystic acne, acne that hasn’t improved after several months of treatment, signs of significant scarring, sudden or severe breakouts with pain and swelling, or acne accompanied by other symptoms (such as excess hair growth or irregular periods) that may point to an underlying hormonal condition.
